Valley Bio and Science Coalition
The Valley Bio and Science Coalition is a region wide collaboration of Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin Counties promoting the laboratory operations currently located in the region as well as developing the basis for an active business attraction effort to bring biotech firms to the area. The primary focus of the business attraction effort is to further diversify the regional economy.
The principal interests of the initiative are to identify the workforce issues confronting the existing industry while coordinating the training and educational needs to secure a skilled workforce for the industry. Through this effort the region would then be better prepared to respond to the staffing requirements of local laboratory firms and those firms that would have an interest to locate in the region in the future.
-
The current efforts of the coalition are:
- A survey of regional laboratory operations to ascertain the skills required by position of each employer as well as the availability of educational courses to train prospective employees.
- Bring together the workforce and educational representatives in the region to determine the level of interest in participation.
- Reach out to the local business sector currently engaged in biotech, research or laboratory work.
- Establish a relationship with Bay Bio to develop an informational base in the Bay area for future biotech expansion or relocation opportunities.
- Application for Grant Funds to further survey and identify the scope of laboratory operations in the region and to determine the levels of training needs in the varied skill/employment positions.
